Tossin began repurposing Amazon.com delivery boxes when investigating exploitative resource
extraction in Manaus, a port city and Free Trade Zone in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.
Here, she interlaces strips of these boxes and satellite images of the Negro and Amazon Rivers to
create baskets. The artist disrupts our associations of barcodes and logos with expedited
commodity chains by using a laborious weaving process inspired by Amazonian traditions. The
baskets cradle handmade terracotta replicas of mass-produced exports from Manaus—pointing to
our rampant consumerist culture and its devastating role in the climate crisis.
